INTRODUCTION

Thirty-eight (38) of fifty-four (54) African nations criminalize queer persons, thereby imposing varying degree of legislative restrictions on sexual desires and practices, basic human rights as individuals and societal stigmatization

Almost all homophobic countries override ethical and human right laws when it comes to the subject of homosexuality. In believing that heterosexuality is the human default and queerness acting as a dent in that default, lawmakers treat such individuals as threat to the "natural" functioning of communities

In Ghana, the section 104(l)(b) of the Criminal Offence Art criminalizes "unnatural carnal knowledge" interpreted as "penile penetration of anything other than the vagina". Since May, 2021, a group by name Coalition for Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values have proposed a bill that seeks to officially criminalize queer persons as well as activists and advocates who support and fight for queer persons.
